GlaxoSmithKline A Global Giant in todays World

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical firms. GSK is widely respected the world over for its quality medicines both prescriptions and vaccines and its humanitarian work as well.

GSK has produced many wonderful products throughout its storied history. As of 2006 Advair, the flagship product of GSK is the second bestselling drug in the United States True, this list is outdated; however, it is the most current public listing on the subject. Advair, helps prevent asthma attacks. It is very effective and its track record has earned it well deserved praise by one and all and it continues to be the flagship product of GSK to this very day. GSK takes pride in the long hours of research and beta testing it puts its products in before they are allowed unto the public market.

With its proven track record, world-wide revenue reported by Wikipedia, at $380 billion dollars, you would think that very little if anything could go wrong with GSK. Well my friend, not only did something go wrong, it went terribly wrong indeed.

In 1993 GSK introduced to the world Paxil. Paxil is a very powerful anti-depressant that seemed like a godsend from GSK to the psychological community. It held out the promise of aiding psychologists in their treatment of clients. Sadly what was discovered once Paxil made it unto the streets was a deadly experience for pregnant women and their unborn children.

Paxil, as it turns out, caused serious heart and liver conditions for the unborn babies and additional issues for their mothers. So a group of lawyers, named the Paxil lawyers, took up the case of these unborn babies and their mothers and sued GSK. The Paxil lawyers were able to earn huge settlements against GSK in the millions of dollars for the damage Paxil had done. The settlement will aid in the treatment of these children but the Paxil lawyers will continue to be on the lookout for other such victims.
